Cactus Cafe Mexican Cuisine

Twilight Cafe Vietnamese Fare and Drinks Coupon

Twilight Cafe – Airline Hwy/Bluebonnet

Groupon: $10 for $20 Worth of Vietnamese Fare and Drinks

Eating authentically prepared food lets you taste the very essence of a country and draws far fewer angry glares than chewing on its national flag. Avoid wedging cloth between teeth with today's Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of Vietnamese fare and drinks at Twilight Cafe.

The culinary craftspeople at Twilight Cafe take taste buds on cultural journeys with a menu of Vietnamese classics made from fresh ingredients with a Cajun twist. The banh mi dac biet—a Vietnamese po boy sandwich—cuddles ham, pork, and fresh vegetables within a french bread sleeping bag to keep them from freezing away from their natural grill-top habitat ($4.50). Bowls sequester the flavors of the bun thit nuong cha gio by separating the rice vermicelli, grilled pork, and egg rolls into three tasty factions ($9.95). Two types of noodles, the pho bo vien's rice noodles topped in meatballs ($7.95) and the mi dac biet's egg noodles topped with barbecue pork and shrimp ($9.95), take leisurely swims in savory soup broth. To cool off Cajun tang, diners can gulp cool glasses of soda or draft or bottled beer ($3–$3.50) or lick a fire extinguisher.

Twilight Cafe welcomes gourmands with clean white tables spangled throughout the restaurant like stars on an American flag T-shirt. A neon-lined counter highlights the full-service bar, which shimmers under the luminous glow of a flat-panel TV. Between bites, diners can kick up impromptu games of shuffleboard across the eatery's slick wood floors or signal to forks that they're ready for another bite by waving the tables' embellishing red napkins.

1. Tell us a little background information about yourself.

My name is Mauree Brooksher.  I am originally from Lafayette, LA; however, I attended LSU for six years & am now happy to call Baton Rouge home.  I obtained my B.S. & M.S. in Early Childhood Education.  I worked at the LSU Child Development Lab Preschool for six years & taught pre-k for four years in both private & public schools.  I absolutely love teaching pre-k; however, my husband & I had our first son in July 2010.  I chose to stay at home with our child.  I plan to resume teaching when my children are school aged.  I have always been very active & health-conscious.  I grew up swimming, play tennis, cheering, tumbling, & running.  In college I began running 5K, 10K, & half marathon races.  I also started participating in yoga & pilates after running races.  I now own Baby Boot Camp & Karna Fitness of Baton Rouge.  I hold my AFAA Group Fitness Certification, Baby Boot Camp Certification, & Karna Fitness Certification.  I love being able to stay home with our son & also help many women reach their fitness goals!

2. What was your inspiration in starting your business?

I had a friend in San Francisco participating in Stroll Fit while I was pregnant.  She called one day to tell me that Baton Rouge had a Baby Boot Camp franchise too & to look into joining Stroll Fit once I had my son.  I became a client in September of 2010 & fell in love with the class & franchise!  It was truly my saving grace after having my son.  I always dreamed of staying home with my child, but I did not realize how necessary it would be to find a community of mothers in Baton Rouge to join.  I found it necessary once having my son & getting into the rhythm of being home.  I knew it was necessary for our health to get out a few times a week to be be around other moms & children.  It was a win win situation at Stroll Fit, because I was getting a great work out, getting to visit & relate to other moms, and my son was being exposed to the outdoors, singing, and meeting other children.  The franchise owner at the time was selling the franchise after owning it for 7 years.  Her children were no longer stroller aged & she was a former teacher like myself.  Therefore, I felt inspired to continue on this amazing franchise.  I wanted many more moms to have the same experience I had as a client!  So after several months of prayer, I took a leap of faith in the business department & purchased the franchise.

3. What do you like most about your running your business?

The thing I like most about Baby Boot Camp & Karna Fitness is I'm providing a variety of opportunities to improve the health of Baton Rouge.  I'm providing fitness classess & community for mothers.  My clients not only reach fitness goals & are in better health, but they also improving their social & mental health by being part of a sweet community of mothers.  I'm providing fitness classes & community for women through Karna Fitness.  Lastly, I'm providing opportunities for children to become a part of a community at Stroll Fit & I get to help them develop by exposing them to songs, counting, nursery rhymes, & much more!

4. Where are some of your favorite places in Baton Rouge? To eat? To have fun?

Herb Bouquet Easy Centerpiece

Herbbouqueteasycenterpiece

My mom showed me something fun she recently started because she needed a centerpiece and had way to many herbs than she could possibly use.  It's a Herb Bouquet & I loved the idea.  They make the room smell good, they look gorgeous, it's a great way to store them for later use and they are simple to put together for last minute guest or parties.

Herbs are an easy plant you can put in the ground or pots in the spring and harvest the fruit all summer long.  Some herbs last well into the fall and oregano & rosemary thrive in the winter here in South Louisiana.  We use our herbs almost daily with our meals and the kids even snack on them when they're playing outside.

In this Herb Bouquet, I cut Basil, Oregano, Chive flowers and Mint.  I added *Zinnias for more color.

*Zinnias- Easy to grow annual flower, come in a wide variety of colors with large, profuse blooms.

Gambino's Bakery Coupon Baton Rouge

Gambinosbakerybatonrouge

Gambino's Bakery, $15 for $30 in food (Essen & Goodwood locations)

Oh my, there are so many good things at Gambino's Bakery...

After opening our doors more than 60 years ago Gambino’s Bakery has become a tradition not only in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, but in all fifty states and around the world. Already known for our delicious cakes, king cakes, pastries and confections, Gambino’s deli on Essen Lane now offers a great selection of Daily Specials, Salads, Soups and Creative Burgers, Sandwiches and Poboys. And with today’s offer, $15 buys $30. You can use the coupons at the deli and for any of our sinfully sweet bakery items.
If you’ve eaten at the deli, then you know the Gambino’s tradition of quality and goodness doesn’t stop at sweets. Choose from the extensive deli menu items such as the ½ lb mid western beef ground chuck hamburger served on a Jalapeño infused brioche bun and topped with our own Mojo Mayo - a smoked onion mayonnaise kicked up with New Orleans spice. You can also select other items like “build your fresh salad”, hot specials of the day or an overstuffed Italian beef poboy, just to name a few.
But if it’s time for a celebration, pick up one of our specialty cakes. The popular Doberge cake, a butter cake filled with a homemade lemon or chocolate custard is a family recipe we’ve used since 1949. And, of course, Mardi Gras wouldn’t be Mardi Gras without a Gambino’s King Cake. If you haven’t experienced the tradition of celebrating with a cake from Gambino’s, you can start your own tradition today. We now ship our famous cakes overnight for you to share with friends or family for special occasions. Every cake is baked fresh daily, one at a time, just as you would make it in your own kitchen.

Joie Petite Designs - Artist Interview

Joiepetitedesigns2

Joie Petite Designs - Artist -Paint N Pour

1. Tell us a little background information about yourself.

My name is Joy Petty.  I am a wife, mother of two, physical therapist, artist and small business owner.  I grew up in Central, graduated from LSU and moved to Zachary shortly after graduating from Physical Therapy school.

2. What was your inspiration in starting your business?

I always loved art as a child and teenager.  After graduating from high school, I put my love of art to the side to focus on college and a career. Around 4 years ago, I took a 6 week oil painting class on Sunday afternoons from Camille Thibodeaux, and my art career began!

I started painting more and more, and eventually began selling my work and even creating commissioned pieces for friends and clients. Then I received some wonderful advice from Madison Lees to begin holding painting parties: Paint N Pour was born!  I formed an art company I named Joie Petite Designs two years ago, and I’ve been having a blast painting and creating ever since!

3. What do you like most about your running your business?

I think one of the things I like best about running my business is meeting so many wonderful people and children in my community!  I feel really connected to Zachary and Baton Rouge, because of all of the personal connections I have been able to establish through my business.

4. Where are some of your favorite places in Baton Rouge? To eat? To have fun?

I have so many places I enjoy in Baton Rouge.  I love the Perkins Road Historic Merchants District!!! There are so many fun and funky boutiques to shop for clothes and gifts.  Of course I love The Foyer! It’s virtually impossible to walk in there and not walk out with a unique piece of art, pottery or even a cool little baby gift!  I love, love, love to eat at DiGiulio Bro’s! That’s where my husband and I went on our first date, and we’ve been regulars there ever since!  For family fun, we usually go to the movies, either at Perkins Rowe or Rave at Mall of Louisiana.  My children are 15 and 8 years old, so the movies are the best bet when it comes to making everyone happy.

5. Do you have a Facebook Page or Twitter Account?

You can find my business page on Facebook under Joie Petite Designs or go to my website: www.joiepetitedesigns.com to find out all the latest information about artwork and events as well as Paint N Pour parties!

You can view and sign up for all scheduled classes at www.paintnpour.com.

Recipe for National Farmers Market Week – Baton Rouge

Nationalfarmersmarketweekbaton

This week is National Farmers Market Week to remind you to Buy Fresh and Buy Local.  This is a big help to our local farmers and economy to keep our food dollars within Louisiana.  Not to mention the fresh, delicious and healthy meals we can create for our families.  We went to the Red Stick Farmer's Market with the family on Saturday and found yummy foods to fill our fridge.  One of the best parts was meeting with the local farmers and being able to chat about their produce or fun recipes.  The  kids loved sipping on local chocolate milk.  Here is a breakfast recipe using the food we found at the Market.

Ingredients:

  1. Egg
  2. Small Creole Onion
  3. Sweet Peppers
  4. Shiitake Mushroom
  5. Ground Pork
  6. Garlic Fresh Chevre - Thanks to Rocking R Dairy

Brown the ground pork.  Slice and saute the onion, mushroom and peppers for 5 min.  Fry egg or you can do sunny side up.  Then I just stacked my cooked ingredients and sprinkled cheese on top.  I didn't use any extra seasonings or salt, it doesn't need it, the flavors of the fresh ingredients were perfect and bold.  Enjoy!

Ceviche Recipe - Baton Rouge Moms

After Josh and I watched an episode of Anthony Bourdain No Reservations where Bourdain ate ceviche, we were determined we wanted it.  The flavors, colors, freshness and light ingredients had us intrigued.  We found a few recipes and have altered them over the past, to fit our taste.  When my sister came in town early July, we had her and my mom over for the ceviche cooking class and it came out Awesome!  My sister is making it herself tonight in celebration of Shark Week 2011, fun!  I'm sharing our recipe, but like any, feel free to change up some of the ingredients or add more or less for your taste.  Hope you love ceviche as much as we do.

Ingredients:

  1. 2 lbs of raw shrimp, chopped, peeled & deveined
  2. 2 red onions diced finely
  3. 3 lemons/3 limes juiced(make sure it's enough juice to cover the first mixture)
  4. 1/2 cup of chopped cilantro(or to taste)
  5. 2 cucumbers peeled and finely chopped
  6. 4 (or to taste) serrano peppers - have fun, can replace with jalapeno, poblano, bell, or other.
  7. 2 avocado's diced
  8. 2 cloves of garlic
  9. salt- to taste

We drop our shrimp(whole) in boiling water for 30 seconds and to kill any bacteria on the surface.  Take out promptly and chop.  Add shrimp, lemon, lime, onion, peppers, garlic and cilantro.  Cover and refrigerate  for 30 min, shrimp will be slightly firm.  Add cucumbers and avocado's, then let it sit for another 30 min.  Add salt to taste and dip with tortilla chips(we rolled the ceviche inside romaine lettuce to stay on our diet:).  It's one of our favorite dishes to make and eat.  Happy Shark Week 2011!

Shark Week 2011

Great-white-shark-1

It's Shark Week 2011 on the Discovery Channel.  Go to their website and get the schedule for the shark shows airing.  They also have games you can play, a shark cam, pictures, a virtual shark dive and even an app you can download.  My kids get really into Shark Week each year.  It's a creative way to educate and have fun learning about those creatures.  If you have younger children, definitely monitor the shows... Though very interesting, some may be a bit intense.
